This Task was given by Dilip Barad Sir, During the Youth Festival. This is not only a task but I think it is a example of apply Criticism and Theory in day to day life.
The task is to academically observe various youth festival events like One Act Play
Within this task, you shall do following activities:
1) One Act Play / Skit - Observe with the theories of Aristotle's Poetics, Dryden's definition of Play, Martin Esslin's Theatre of Absurd and David Compton's Comedy of Menace in mind. Try to situate the play within the frame of literary canons. Try to make your interpretations with the help of various literary approaches like feminism, psychoanalysis, cultural studies, biographical approach, mirroring of the moment (contemporary society) etc.
2) Mono-Acting - Do thematic study. What sort of themes are performed. Mythical characters are performed? Historical? or some unknown common man or woman. Is one person playing roles of many or only one?
3) Poetry Recitation: Listen the recitation. Try to apply theories of Coleridge (poem vs poetry), Wordsworth (Spontaneity, simplicity), T S Eliot (depersonalization), I A Richards (Figurative language), Cleanth Brooks (language of Paradox). You can apply New Critics approach of minute textual reading of the poems or structuralist or post-structuralist (deconstruction) in reading the poems recited in competition. Thematic study shall also be done of the poems.
4) In Lalit Kala event - try to do thematic study. Political satire, mirroring of contemporary society, satire on contemporary happenings etc can be observed. Is anybody trying modernism or postmodernism in painting or collage? Or most of the creative works are traditional in style of composition? On last day, all these items will be exhibited so do not miss to have a look at exhibition in External Department.
5) If you reach early to see Kala-Yatra, you can also do thematic study various tableaux. How the zeitgeist (ideas and spirit of time) of the time in which we live is captured by the imagination of Bhavnagaris can be observed.
This note is very worthy to remembered it thus I would like to make a blog on it.
